Sylvestrians bag LV Jayaweera Boxing title

St. Sylvester's College, Kandy, a household name in boxing in the fifties and sixties stamped their class and bounced back into recognition when they became champions at the 40th L.V. Jayaweera Memorial Boxing Champion organized by the School Boxing Association of Sri Lanka and sponsored by MAS Linea Clothing - a subsidiary of MAS Holdings of BOI, Pallekelle and worked off at the Kengalle Navodaya Maha Vidyalaya last Tuesday night.
It was a night of Sylvestrians moment of glory as their boxers fought with a lot of ferocity to vanquish their opponents reminiscent of the days in the sixties boxers in the calibre of Olympic boxer Malcolm Bulner, Michael Bulner, Christopher Bulner and Tito Bulner, Lloyd Hope, D.C. Weerasinghe, G.A.S. Gunasinghe, Nimal Lewke, just to name a few who use to demolish their opponents in the sixties. The Silvestrians had five winners in a competition which permitted only a maximum of 7 participants from each and this will give some indication to the extent the Sylvstrians would have denominated the meet.
The Sylvestrian boxers produced exhilarating displays in the semi-finals and there was a clear indication by day 3 that they will have a tilt at the trophy. The winners for St. Sylvester's were V.S.B. Senanayake, W.A. Sampath, M.N.M. Rimshard, Y.R.C. Bandara and M.A.M. Ashik.
The Principal of St. Sylvester's College Ranil Meetiyagoda who was present throughout the finals said they are great and once again the boxing in the school has been brought back to its pristine glory. Our next target is T.B. Jayah Memorial Boxing meet and the coveted Stubbs Shield.
St. Sylvester's College accumulated 34 points to become clear winners against the 23 points collected by the runners-up Vidyaratane University Pirivena, Horana. In third place was little known Kantale Maha Vidyalaya, Kantale with 15 points. In fourth place was Sri Sumangala College with 11 points. Royal College, Colombo, Dharmaraja College, Kandy and the defending champions Peradeniya Central College were placed fifth with each collecting 10 points.

Light Fly Weight 'B' 44-46 kgs. 15-16 years
Y.R.C. Bandara (St. Sylvester's College) beat A.A.C.D. Weerasinghe (Pilimathalawa MV) Referee stopped contest in round 2.

Feather Weight 56-60 kgs. 17-18 years.
M.A.M. Ashik (St. Sylvester's College) beat K.L.A.S.D. Senaratne (Bandaranaike MV, Gampaha) on points 7/1.

St. Sylvester's College Kandy were restricted to 209 for 9 in another match played in Kandy which Maliyadeva batsmen chased the target losing 7 wickets. The home team batted first and R Jayaratne led the Maliyadeva bowling attack to take 3 for 29. Thineth Manishka, C Huruggamuwa and H G Jayantha took two wickets each.

It was a hugely positive effort by Dilshan and the team to win the trophy in Zimbabwe against a strong opposition. It was under genuine pressure that the youngsters performed and they must persist at top level. I have heard from the young players that they get an opening only when a senior is not available and this mindset is not good in my book. It is an opportunity that should be grabbed when presented, to cement his place. That is how an opportunity presents for a new comer. The easier option is to get into the team but it shows character to hold his place with certainty.
It was nice to see Dilshan back in the runs. When he hits a purple patch he scores quickly and big. A great plus for the team.

The Asia Cup squad has been named and it is unfortunate to see from his point of view that Sanath could not find a slot. It is unfortunate because he has pushed people in charge to leave him out. Cricket in Sri Lanka changed dramatically after 1996 and Sanath was in the forefront of this renaissance. It is sad that he has placed himself in this situation. Being 40 plus he knows that it was required of him to score every time he walked out. Being fit means a lot more than running fast. To run fast you have to be naturally gifted but to be fit at the top level at cricket needs reflexes, eye sight and speed of recovery from injury amongst other requirements.
Only Sanath would know this. At the pace that the game is played there are no safe places like short third or short fine any more. It’s all speed, pace and power together with consistency. I am surprised at the inclusion of Samaraweera. He has tremendous temperament but is a single mode player. It speaks volumes of the ability or lack of it of the younger players that Samaraweera can yet find a slot in the shorter version of the game. He did well in the one day series in India but I frankly cannot see him change his singular style. He is also slow on the field and does not have a strong arm. Yet all credit to him that he is able to find a place. Sri Lanka has three opening bats now in Mahela, Dilshan and Tharanga. It gives the team great options. It was good to see Mahela make a hundred during the IPL and he has not looked back. He is highly talented and would stay long and make big runs once in form unlike Dilshan.
India made a mistake in Zimbabwe by not including a few seniors. When they do come back they would not have the same confidence in the juniors which in turn will rub off on their performances. One hopes that they would have regrouped.
As for Pakistan, they are the unpredictable package but with Shoaib Akthar back he would be a handful under lights in Dambulla. Its a pity that this ground has not been made full use of. True there was controversy surrounding the ground at the initial stage and it does not matter who initiated it, but once a facility is in place full use should be made. One does not know how the strip would play but for cricket’s sake I hope it is true and the outfield quick and even, and plenty of runs be scored during this tourney.

No Jayasuriya and Mendis in Asia Cup squad

Forty-year-old opener Sanath Jayasuriya has been dropped from the 15-member Sri Lanka squad for the Asia Cup starting in Dambulla next week. Also missing from the line-up is spinner Ajantha Mendis,new comers Dinesh chandimaal, jeevana Mendis, thissara Perera and also Dihara fernaando, thilina Thusara, lahiru thirinambe while fast-bowling allrounder Farveez Maharoof is back in favour after recovering from a side strain which had kept him out of contention since February last year.

This was the first squad picked by Sri Lanka's new selection panel, headed by former captain Aravinda de Silva, who took charge two weeks ago.

Sri Lanka coach Trevor Bayliss had warned at the start of the year that Jayasuriya was unlikely to be picked as a specialist opener and that he would have to force his way in as a spinning allrounder if he was to play the 2011 World Cup. He had been left out of Sri Lanka's side for the tri-series in Bangladesh earlier this year as well, and had been moved out of his favoured opening slot to the middle order late last year. Jayasuriya's most recent outings for the national side were at the recent World Twenty20 in the West Indies, where he had a miserable time, averaging 3.75 in six matches.

There were some surprises in the slow-bowling department with left-arm spinner Rangana Herath, who last played an ODI in 2004, chosen ahead of Mendis, who has had a reasonably good tri-series in Zimbabwe. Two offspinners at opposite ends of their careers, 38-year-old Muttiah Muralitharan and newcomer Suraj Randiv, are the other specialist spinners.

The Asia Cup will be held in Sri Lanka from June 15-24. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are the other participating countries.

1) From 1st April – 15th May 2010 – collection of the songs/jingles via registered post and email

2) The best songs/jingles amoung from those received will be selected by the most outstanding judges from Sri Lanka and India. (May last week)

3) Then the songs are set to broadcast in Shakthi FM by giving a code system to the songs/Jingles and judgement made by the SMS votings and email votings by the listeners until the top 10 songs/Jingles obtained for the Final competition. (June – July end)

4) The Grand Finale will be held in the month of July or August as a Grand Event in the year of 2010.

The Final 10 songs will be made as an ALBUM released by M- ENTERTAINMENT

Boy Raped and Killed in Mosque Toilet, One Held

DUBAI — A man who allegedly raped and murdered a six-year-old boy in the bathroom of a mosque in Dubai has been arrested. A Dubai Police source said the operations room received information that a Pakistani child was found dead in the bathroom of a mosque located in  Al Qusais on Friday.

When the police reached the mosque, a man told them that he had come to the mosque for Duhr prayers and that when he went to the bathroom to prepare for it, he saw traces of blood on the floor after which he saw the child behind the door. The boy’s pants had been removed.

The police, upon entering the bathroom, noticed that the child had been raped. They took the body to the General Department of Forensic Medicine and launched an investigation. Later, a Bahraini national was arrested on the suspicion of committing the crime.

He confessed to the crime during interrogation. He said he consumed alcohol late into the night on Thursday and went to the mosque to perform Eid prayers on Friday and returned home. He continued drinking alcohol and later went out to visit his friend to celebrate the festival.

Around 9.30am, he left his friend’s house and went to the mosque. He  saw three children on the street, who asked him for Eid gifts.

The man told the police that he saw a boy, whose age he guessed to be around nine. He told the boy that he had no money on him but he would give money if the latter followed him.

He then took the boy to the bathroom in the mosque, locked the door and raped him during which he covered the boy’s nose and mouth with his hands to prevent him from screaming.

He later noticed that the child had stopped moving, so he left him there and fled the scene. He returned home and had a shower.

The suspect told the police that he did not know the boy and that day was the first time he had seen him. He also confessed that it was not the first time he had had forcible sex with males.
